Very Good Films

There is nothing quite like the feeling of having just watched what will become one of your favorite films. It’s the same kind of feeling you get when you’re watching one of your favorite films with a friend who is seeing it for the first time. You want them to love it like you do; you want them to feel all the feels that you did when you first watched it. Very Good Films is built on this idea. It’s just as much about the love for sharing or discovering films as it is about watching them.

Emma Stevenson is a film lover based in New York City. She co-founded book subscription service [reads] and has been cataloging films for a while now. Beth Wilkinson is a film lover based in Melbourne. She is the founder and editor of Lindsay magazine, runs a creative practice called Oak Park Studio and is always on the lookout for good film recommendations. So when Emma offered to share her spreadsheet of favorite films with friends, Beth—knowing their shared taste for Luca Guadagnino, the 80s, sunflowers on film, Barbara Loden and Muriel’s Wedding”—responded with a very quick yes please. Beth watched the first film on Emma’s list that night (An Unmarried Woman) and, shortly after, Very Good Films was born. We want this website to feel like a gift from a friend, a personal recommendation. We believe films are important—they are steady and incremental, small moments of our own unremembered dreams.
