Very Good Films

There is nothing quite like the feeling of having just watched what will become one of your favorite films. It’s the same kind of feeling you get when you’re watching one of your favorite films with a friend who is seeing it for the first time. You want them to love it like you do; you want them to feel all the feels that you did when you first watched it. Very Good Films is built on this idea. It’s just as much about the love for sharing or discovering films as it is about watching them.

Emma Stevenson is a film lover based in New York City. She co-founded book subscription service [reads] and has been cataloging films for a while now. Beth Wilkinson is a film lover based in Melbourne. She is the founder and editor of Lindsay—a publishing focused on stories about art, culture, nature and place—and works on graphic design and editorial projects for clients internationally through Beth Wilkinson Studio.

During the first COVID lockdown, Emma offered to share a spreadsheet with some of her favorite films with friends. When Beth saw that list that encompassed their shared taste for Luca Guadagnino, the 80s, sunflowers on film and Barbara Loden, the idea for Very Good Films was born. We want this website to feel like a gift from a friend—a personal recommendation. It will evolve and grow in time, but it will always remain a timeless and succinct list of films tied together through the simple fact that we both love them.
